Britta Blain
Head Baker, Castlerock Sourdough
FountainCity, WI, the USA
We got this mill early in the year so we could start offering fresh milled loaves through Castlerock Sourdough! We now offer two made with 100% fresh milled grains: The Sourdough Spelt Loaf and the Sourdough Buttered Wheat Loaf. Our other original loaves also feature a portion of fresh milled grains, — said Britta Blain on her Instagram page.

This mill has unique features relative to other options available on the market. It is a very beautiful mill, well-built. That is solid alder. This is a true granite stone mill. I really like the idea of having granite stones, just like a lot of years ago. The whole mill exceeded my expectations. I would recommend the mill to anybody. I think it’s amazing.

Millstone Mills – A Family Tradition

When our family first became interested in milling, we never imagined it would grow into a full-scale production. Initially, we repaired flour milling equipment in Ukraine and abroad. This hands-on experience taught us a valuable lesson: the quality of bread depends directly on the quality of flour. We had the opportunity to see the flour produced by mills with corundum and porcelain millstones — and we noticed that these stones were often too aggressive on the grain and couldn’t achieve a fine enough grind.

We wanted to eat real, wholesome bread. The kind our ancestors lived on. We know from family stories that bread was the foundation of the daily diet for centuries. Our forebears would go out to herd livestock or work the fields, armed only with a jug of milk and a piece of bread. And with that, they plowed, sowed, and harvested. Bread was the essence of life itself. Eventually, we started baking our own bread — and built our first mill.

We tested dozens of types of stone before we found the one. The very same kind our great-grandparents once used for their millstones. A natural stone with the perfect density, grain structure, and durability — gentle on the grain and capable of grinding it into ultra-fine flour.

Today, we handcraft stone mills using that natural millstone. The flour they produce has no equal in Ukraine or across Europe.

Now, The Miller mills are purchased not only in Ukraine, but also across the globe — in the U.S., Europe, and Asia.

Our mills are built by an extended family that has walked the journey from homemade prototypes to international exports. Every mill is made with care, experience, and inspiration. We strive to stay true to ourselves, to live in harmony with nature, to preserve ancient traditions, and to pass them on to our children.
